Lets welcome the next festival (Mid-Autumn Festival)~ i'm happy to get invited by our master of bloggers, Criz to this join this soft launch of new limited edition Gartien Pineapple Cake! It all happened in a shop called Kafe GohKaki in Bishop street at a beautiful saturday morning.

Kafe GohKaki

This year, Gartien has launched its new limited edition packaging for this auspicious occasion. The new trendy yet elegant packaging was designed by the talented Penang-based artist, Ms. Li Jynn.

According to Ms. Li Jynn, she wishes to create awareness to the public by including a Civet Cat in her artwork, which reminds public about the rights of other living things. The Civet cat was abused to produce Civet coffee. Civet coffee, refers to the beans of coffee berries once they have been eaten and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). The civet eats the berries for the beans' fleshy pulp, then in the digestive tract, fermentation occurs. The civet's proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans, making shorter peptides and more free amino acids. Passing through a civet's intestines the beans are then defecated with other fecal matter and collected. The method of collected feces from wild civets has given way to intensive farming methods in which caged civets are force fed the coffee beans. This method of production has raised ethical concerns about the treatment of civets due to "horrific conditions" including isolation, poor diet, small cages and a high mortality rate. According to an officer from TRAFFIC, the trade in civets to make kopi luwak may constitute a significant threat to wild civet populations.

Gartien was founded in Penang by a young chap who came up with his own recipe for the pineapple cake using the freshest local pineapples and the best ingredients for the shortbread pastry. All ingredients used to make this are 100% natural and without any added preservatives. During the soft launch, "We made our own fillings from 100% fresh pineapples sourced within the state of Penang. It is laborious and time consuming. Therefore, only limited quantity available during mid-autumn." The price is at Rm 38 nett for a box, which indeed is yet another good choice as gift apart from ordinary mooncake.
